Lisa Barnard’s Running Fast-Senses Off explores the unseen forces molding our world and perception in the age of technological acceleration, characterized by the ubiquity of screens.
Barnard’s project fits into this scenario of paradoxical fusion of humanity and technology – shaping our very existence and experience – which moves from extensive research on drone warfare, autonomous vehicles and the sensory world of bats.
This first retrospective exhibition represents the amalgamation of elements drawn from three distinct bodies of work, all taking place in California – Whiplash Transition, Virtual Iraq, and YOLO – that investigate both the relationship between drone pilots, the military and the dehumanizing effects of screens, and the connections between bats, echolocation, our senses, and climate change.
Forced to measure ourselves against the advances in machine learning and computational innovation, Barnard stresses the urgent need to question the role of consciousness and the impact our technological choices will have on the future of humanity and the planet.
